Mineral deficiencies occur throughout the world in all classes of livestock, causing reduction in meat, milk and fibre production through a range of mechanisms. Severe deficiencies are becoming less frequent in Australia due to improvements in identification and treatment. However, marginal deficiencies are much more difficult to identify, and significant production losses may occur without any obvious symptoms being present.

Livestock at greatest risk of nutrient deficiencies are those fed exclusively on feed (pastures and grains) sourced from the one property, as there is no opportunity for outside nutrients to unintentionally balance out a localised deficiency.

Pasture nutrient availability is impacted by;

• pasture species and its’ growth stage,

• soil type- its characteristics such as pH, organic matter content and the impact of moisture on the soil.

 

Soil testing is most of use for assessing phosphorous, potassium and sulfur deficiencies, and unless it is a quality soil test by an independent testing facility it is of limited use as an indicator of potential trace mineral deficiencies. Soil parent material is the more useful indicator for potential trace mineral deficiencies, eg, granitic soils may be low in copper and selenium.
